Affects of Closing Maitai Bay Campsite

Dec. 1, 2021, 1:25 p.m.

The local hapū of Maitai Bay, Karikari Peninsula along with the support of Ngāti Kahu Iwi have taken the initiative to close popular Maitai Bay campgrounds for the summer period to avoid any potential influx of people from outside the rohe. This is due to the recent number of cases within the area and the low vaccination rate. Felicity Foy, councilor for the Te Hiku ward talks to us about the impacts that this may have on the local economy, knowing that Maitai is a draw card for tourism and camping over the summer season. Felicity understands the precautionary measures taken by the hapū and iwi, thanking them for their actions, but remains concerned about local businesses and finding balance as we transition to living with Covid.
