Papakawau Culvert Development

Dec. 14, 2021, 1:46 p.m.

During his time as Minister for Regional Economic Development, Shane Jones managed to fund  a lot of projects in Te Tai Tokerau with one of them being the current project in the Mangonui area of Papakawau to replace a culvert with a bridge. The $5 million works commenced in September, but now the local hapū of Te Matarahurahu have sought a hui with Waka Kotahi over the name of the location saying it is incorrect. Freddy Matthews, a kaumātua and rangatira of Te Matarahurahu hapū and Kenana Marae says the correct name is Tokatoka and Papakawau is located further along. Shane Jones makes comment on the name Papakawau being used in manuscripts and wide use by whānau in the 40's and 50's.
