Plastic Bottle Pollution: Threatening Our Way of Life

Dec. 15, 2021, 12:20 p.m.

According to Greenpeace, every year it is estimated we toss away more than a billion plastic bottles here in Aotearoa. Juressa Lee (Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi, Rarotonga) is currently the plastics campaigner at Greenpeace Aotearoa, working towards eliminating unnecessary single use plastic and she talks to us about the kaupapa and how we could tautoko. Earlier this week a Giant toroa (albatross) sculpture made of plastics bottles with a ten meter wingspan was revealed at Mission Bay, Tāmaki. The toroa is made out of single-use plastic bottles, and crafted in honour of a toroa who starved to death after swallowing a plastic bottle. Juressa Lee asks us all to join the petition to ban single use plastic bottles in Aotearoa and incentivise reusable and refillable alternatives.
