Celebrating the True Essence of Matariki

For Māori, the rising of Matariki the cluster of stars also known as Pleiades indicates the Māori new year and now Matariki has been acknowledged by the Government of Aotearoa with an annual public holiday. Tūmamao Harawira shares some kōrero and reminds us that it is Puangarua known as Rigel which heralds the beginning of the Māori new year for us of Te Tai Tokerau. With the new public holiday for Matariki, Tūmamao emphasises the importance of celebrating Matariki without compromising the true essence of what Matariki is really about.
