Te Papa Tongarewa CEO, Dr Arapata Hakiwai (Te Tairawhiti, Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongowhakaata), accompanied the remains of around 64 Māori and Moriori tupuna as they made their way home from Austria. Dr Hakiwai says "the Vienna museum acknowledged the activities of their countryman (Andreas Reischek), who spent twelve years in New Zealand from 1877 to 1889, were abhorrent."
