Our kaumātua are fit as a fiddle with the odd walking stick making an appearance on court as kaumātua from across Te Taitokerau came together for the annual kaumātua games hosted by Te Hiku Hauora in Kaitaia.
At least seventy of our elderly spent the morning rotating through a number of gaming stations at Te Ahu with a variation of netball, dodgeball and a quiz - all games being health related, age specific which built an environment of laughter and whānaungatanga followed by entertainment from the Te Hiku Ukelele Group.
Te Hiku Hauora Helath Promotions Manager Jo Urlich said the day was about celebrating kaumātua from Te Hiku region and beyond.
“It’s about getting our kaumātua out of the house to physically engage with other from around the rohe.
“We run a Korikori A Kaumātua weekly group that includes nutrition classes, line dancing and aqua aerobics to name a few and this is just a day that we can all come together and celebrate,” said Urlich.
