Feb. 13, 2020, 2:28 p.m.

The local Hokianga community came together on Wednesday to commemorate the 180th anniversary of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi at the Māngungu Mission Station.

The Hokianga signing was attended by nearly 3000 people and followed less than a week after the first Treaty signing at Waitangi on the 12th of February, 1840. After the Treaty had been debated, over 70 local rangatira signed the document – more than twice the number of rangatira who signed at Waitangi.
