Ngāti Hine Purchases 6th Kiwifruit Orchard

March 1, 2021, 12:59 p.m.

Ngāti Hine Forestry Trust has celebrated the recent purchase of their 6th Zespri Gold kiwifruit orchard in Waipapa, taking the Trust’s kiwifruit footprint in Northland to over 32ha canopy.

At the blessing ceremony with SEEKA, they also launched their shared industry training program in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development which would see some 60 trainees complete a one-week training program led by SEEKA with intensive pastoral support delivered by Ngati Hine Forestry Trust.

On Tuesday 27th of February, they opened their training program with SEEKA and MSD with 30 trainees coming into Waipapa for induction thus heralding an opportunity for industry, iwi and the government partnering to provide a much-needed workforce for the horticulture industry. Successful trainees will have the opportunity to take up work with SEEKA for the up and coming season.

Next week a further cohort of trainees will commence training – preparing for work. This project is a new venture for MSD – which sees industry and iwi working together to deliver work outcomes for the Northland region.
