"Healthy Environment, Healthy Tamariki"

Tangonge Domain, the abandoned park on the end of Bonnets Rd, has been given new light under 'Open The Curtains' and 'Aupouri, Ngāti Kahu Trust'. After a long drawn out process to begin development, the new and reformed park is now underway.

Manuera Riwai (Project Manager) behind the development of the park, was shocked to see rangatahi in Kaitaia’s western neighbourhood (Lake Rd, Bonnets Rd, Griggs St) were left without proper play and lifestyle facilities. He aimed to tackle this challenge head on.

“We were working in Kaitaia West, here on Bonnets Road, there were lots of kids playing on the road and one thing lead to another, we talked to them, asked them - why?”

“And one of them said well, we have no park to go to.”

Community support includes our Pasifika community, to local whānau, getting their hands dirty to see a brighter future for our rangatahi. Rex Halkyard, Kaiāwhina of the park development, would like to see a play space for our rangatahi that spans far and wide, with plenty of opportunities to keep them entertained.

“We can get our league fields on, we also want to put in playgrounds for our little tamariki, a softball field aswell and we also want to do a garden here for our rangatahi.”

With a long list of concepts to bring to the park, rangatahi in Kaitaia’s western neighbourhood will finally be given a level playing field.
