Devon Wikaira Extended Interview

July 25, 2022, 3:45 p.m.

In this extended interview, we hear from the mokopuna of celebrated Māori soldier, Harding Waipuke Leaf.

Harding Leaf was born in Whirinaki, a small settlement in South Hokianga, in 1890. He was from Te Hikutū, a hapū of Ngāpuhi.

He served in both World Wars. In the First World War, his company traveled to Gallipoli.  Harding served over four years before returning home to New Zealand. He was killed in the Second World War in 1941, at The Battle for Crete.

Many New Zealand men were killed in action along with their Australian comrades. Every year, on April 25th (ANZAC Day) we remember those that served in the World Wars,  those that have served in Vietnam, Borneo and Malay as well as those that continue to serve.

We spoke with Maikio McGrath and Devon Wikaira at Te Rau Aroha. The museum, on the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a special place where people can go to learn about and remember the 28th Māori Battalion.
