'Te Rangi Paki o Ngāti Wai' Solar Energy Project Launches

Oct. 12, 2022, 7:53 p.m.

Te Poari o Ngātiwai secured funding through the Ministry of Business Innovation & Employment’s Māori and Public Housing Renewable Energy Fund to provide solar panels to 8 Ngātiwai Marae.

Ngātiwai partnered with Whangārei business Huband’s Energy and Nau Mai Rā for the project that will decrease Marae power overheads significantly.

When finished it will enable people to connect to the virtual power hub that will deliver savings into the homes of participating whānau.
The 12-month project will install solar panels onto the 8-participating marae, and a program of engagement across the district to recruit local households to join the Ngātiwai virtual power hub through Nau Mai Rā.

The Mokau and Ngunguru Marae installations have been completed and whanau are excited about the opportunity of achieving power self-sufficiently, whilst also having a smaller carbon footprint for their marae.
