The Aupouri Aquifer Water Study Commences For The Next Month

Oct. 13, 2022, 12:32 p.m.

The Te Hiku Water Study aerial survey began this week at a farm in Pukenui with a karakia by local Te Aupouri kaumātua Heta Conrad. The helicopter will be flown by the SkyTem team, twice a day, over the next 4-6 weeks to measure the Aupouri Aquifer that's deep beneath the surface of Te Hiku o Te Ika.

The Aquifer study is funded $3.3million by Kānoa (Provincial Groth Fund) and managed through Aqua Intel Aotearoa. The three iwi - Ngai Takoto, Te Rarawa and Te Aupouri and Northland Regional Council, Far North District Council, Department of Conservation and GNS Science have come together as project partners.

They hope to understand more about the aquifer including the depth of the resource, risk areas for seawater intrusion, how it connects to lakes and wetlands, how it is recharged and how it can be used sustainably for economic development.
