"You couldn't ask for a better candidate for this area," states Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, co-leader of Te Pāti Māori, about Mariameno Kapa-Kingi, who announced today that she will be running again for Te Tai Tokerau in the 2023 election.
In the 2020 election, Kapa-Kingi had an impressive campaign as a first-time candidate. When Te Hiku Media spoke to her at the Te Pāti Māori AGM in Whangārei on Saturday, she said the time is right because "Our whānau deserve better backing, they deserve a bigger, (a) greater Māori voice in the house."
Ngarewa-Packer believes that Kapa-Kingi has everything they look for in servant-leadership and is confident she can win the seat.
"Mariameno is a real wahine; she's grassroots, she's been through real-life experiences, and I think like most of us, those of us that are candidates or support the party, we are real whānau dealing with real issues and our primary focus is on the oranga of our people and the oranga of our taiao."
