A rōpū of Ngāti Hine rangatahi led by Mateora Butler, held a wānanga at Otiria Marae, Moerewa discussing the tikanga & pūrākau of Ngāti Hine & their tupuna Hineamaru.
The main kaupapa of this wānanga is Te Tū o Ngāti Hine - what it means to stand in your divine right as a Ngāti Hine descendent, supporting our elders to navigate obstacles in life.
Some of the methods used during the wānanga included whakapapa, waiata & pūrākau and was supported by local kuia & kaumatua including Moe Milne, Tohe Ashby & Kene Martin.
We catch up with the organizers of the event - Mateora Butler, Varron Armstrong & Hawaiikii Henare to see what this wānanga will bring to our rangatahi & to the wider rohe of Ngāti Hine overall.
When speaking about the value of this wānanga Mateora Butler says "It's really important because there's not much people who know historical things about their history or where they come from or their roots".
