NZSL Courses Free For Whangārei

Aug. 23, 2018, 1:47 p.m.

Free New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) courses hope to spread throughout Northland. The council has given a grant to allow Eddie Hokianga to teach NZSL courses to the Whangārei community, free of charge. The courses are available at three locations - Onerahi, Otangarei, and the City Centre.
The courses have been quickly booked up, however Eddie hopes to not only run more course in the future, but expand into the Far North as well.  Being able to communicate in NZSL is a useful tool, many of the participants wish to learn because of a family member, a friend, people in their community, or simply improve the way they do their job and impact the community on a meaningful level.
Hokianga teaches his classes in near silence, relying on NZSL and a whiteboard to communicate, teach and connect with his students.
Kim Robinson a member of the deaf community says “There is a big need in the community for people who want to learn sign language, and tonights class is evidence of that”
Eddie’s Facebook page is packed full of dates, information and photos that can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/LearnNZSLwith
