The majority of cafe customers in Whangārei city centre are in full support of smokefree outdoor dining.
Information was collected as part of the Fresh Air Project Whangārei, a three-month smokefree outdoor dining pilot which is an initiative supporting hospitality venues to have outdoor dining areas that are totally smokefree and vapefree.
As a result of this pilot 10 cafes within Whangārei became smokefree, adding to the 14 that were already smokefree prior to the promotion.
The Northland District Health Board Smokefree coordinator Bridget Rowse says "the pilot was designed to allow the public to experience dining without the effects of tobacco smoke".

Callaghan says "for the period of the pilot originally the entire town basin eateries were smokefree" also saying "the coolest thing about that is that they've all decided at the end of the pilot to remain smokefree so basicly our town basin is smokefree".
