Fire Forces Evacuations in Ahipara

Feb. 8, 2019, 5:28 p.m.

Fire services from around Northland have been battling a fire during the night and throughout the day along a hillside in Ahipara.

Emergency services responded to the call out at around 1.30am this morning, however, due to the steep terrain of the hillside had to call efforts off and re-start at first light today.

There were 4 helicopters with monsoon buckets in attendance sharing the load with ground crews and assisting in the efforts.

Principal Rural Fire Officer, Miles Taylor said appliances had been brought in by surrounding fire crews to help Ahipara and Kaitāia fire crews tackle the blaze.

'We've had a command unit centre established here to control the situation. We're happy with the progress made today. It's now controlled but not completely safe till the morning', said Taylor.

Forestry Fire Fighters from Kaikohe are now in the bush and will maintain dampening the area until fire services are satisfied.
