Want to apply your development skills to ensuring Māori and Indigenous people have a place in a digital future that respects privacy and data sovereignty? Haere mai ki Te Hiku Media!

We recently helped launch the Whare Kōrero App which brings all 21 Iwi radio stations together in a digital whare that respects Māori tikanga and data sovereignty. The backend of the Whare streamlines workflows for live streaming, broadcasting, content management, and archives. The Whare Kōrero also provides enhanced access to high quality Te Reo Māori content, and this is essential for ensuring a positive future for te reo Māori. Check out to see how automatic speech recognition and parts of speech labelling can bring new life to native speaker archives.

We're also building natural language processing tools for indigenous languages, with te reo Māori being the first. To solve the data "problem" of machine learning, we built, a way to crowdsource the collection of hundreds of hours of spoken language, and it streamlines machine learning by providing a comprehensive API for access to data. We're also working on a real-time pronunciation tool that will help bring back the native sound of te reo Māori, undoing years of damage through the influence of colonisation and the English language.

If these projects sound exciting, we want to hear from you! We're also looking for developers who share a passion for working on projects that benefit society. At Te Hiku Media you'll have the opportunity to work on open source projects and contribute back to the community. You'll get to work on the Whare Kōrero that supports the telling of stories that matter to our communities. You'll help accelerate the revitalisation of te reo Māori so that all New Zealanders can speak te reo by 2040. You'll also help us pioneer the Kaitiakitanga License which is changing how we build digital tools to ensure we look after marginalised communities and prevent privileged groups from unfairly benefiting from our mahi.

Te Hiku Media is a registered charity. We offer a relaxed, whānau-oriented, work environment that values tikanga and a healthy work-life balance. We also have strong values around data sovereignty and privacy.

We support diversity especially in STEM. Māori, Pasifika, Indigenous, Women, and LGBTQI are encouraged to apply.

This position can be remote or based in our offices in Kaitaia. We also have staff in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch so there is the opportunity for shared working spaces. Since COVID-19, most of our staff work from home and pop into the office when needed.
